He was predeceased by: his parents, James Connell and Helen Irene McMonagle (Miller); and his grandsons, James Karl McMonagle and Stephen Coglan McMonagle. He is survived by: his wife Carol Ann Coglan of Rye; his sons, Richard (Carolyn) of Austin, TX, Robert (Denise) of Davenport, IA and David (Ann) of St. Paul, MN; and his grandchildren, Patrick and Grace.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, people make a gift to the military-related charity of their choice.
