John Byer Obituary
Born in Trenton New Jersey on October 8, 1936, John L. Byer entered into rest on October 6, 2022 in Manteca, Ca. He is preceded is death by his sister Beth Johnson. John was 85 years old.
Mr. Byer is survived by his loving family; wife Judy Byer, son Michael L. Byer, daughter Lise Ann Byer, grandchildren, Lucca Scott, Smith Byer and Miles Byer, as well as one sister Helene Braverman.
John grew up in New Jersey and attended BMI (Bordentown Military Institute) and PMC (Pennsylvania Military College) (now Widener). He was associated with the Theta Chi Fraternity. Additionally, John attended the University of Santo Tomas in Manlla in the Philippines.
John's career in teaching begin in 1962 where he begin teaching on McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey; went to the Department of Defense schools in Toul and Toul-Rosieres in France, England, and the Philippines and ended his career in 1997 at New Haven and Sequoia Elementary schools in Manteca. John was a well respected teacher and one that many children remembered fondly.
John was always a teacher representative of his school, both overseas and in Manteca. He was a lifetime member of the NEA (National Educators Association). He was President of the Manteca Educators Association, and became the President of the Coordinating Council of San Joaquin County. He was the recipient of the prestigious John R. Williams Award and was given Letters of Recognition from Senator Pat Johnston and, a representative of the Assembly.
John was an avid reader. He especially enjoyed history, visiting many historic French, English, and other European sites. Following historic routes, and exploring ruins in his various country travels were one of his favorite activities. He was a member of the Civil War Society in Modesto.
John was generous and kind; he was always a true gentlemen to all, and a dear loving man to all his family. He will be especially missed by family, good friends, neighbors, and by all who came to the Sequoia Breakfast Group. His warm smile, positive outlook, good memories, stories, and his ever present mustache set him apart as a special person you became to know and love.
P.L. Fry and Son is honored to be serving the Byer family. A memorial will be Friday October 21, 2022 at 11:30 AM held at P.L. Fry and Son Chapel 290 N. Union Rd. Manteca, Ca. He will be laid to rest at Parkview Cemetery. A link will be provided for live streaming of the memorial service for all who cannot attend, passwords are not necessary.
