He was loved and cherished by many people including : his parents, Hughes Aircraft and Raytheon; his brother Thomas "Tom" Friend; his son Michael DeScala; his wife Margaret Friend; his children, Amy Friend, Paul DeScala and Tina DeScala Garcia; and his siblings, Richard "Rick" Friend, Teresa "Teri" Dempski, Lawrence "Larry" Friend, Mary Griffin and Karen Christie. He was also cherished by spouses, a combined 10 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
