Daryl Mutton wrote a sympathy message

“I knew Marshall at UCSB from 1993-94; he was a teaching assistant and I was his student. He was a kind and generous man, and even though I was only 19 and he maybe 27, he had so much wisdom beyond his years. I don't know what inspired me to look him up today, but my mind drifted to my days at UCSB and I was thinking of the professors and graduate students who were especially friendly and helpful. Marshall made such an impact that I clearly remembered him 27 years later. My condolences.”

“I met Marshall in Hawaii. While he came to visit his grandma and surf summers. I reconnected with him in 2019. The same fun loving guy, with a stronger spiritual sense picked me up at the airport. I'm so grateful I got to spend some quality time with him and his family. Love you Marshall! Thank you for being apart of my life.”

Ken Weisner wrote a sympathy message

“Marshall was a luminous colleague at De Anza. He was an innovator and energizer. He had his students making films long before that was the norm. He wanted to empower students, and he did. I wish there had been more time at De Anza to learn from him. I thank him for his spirit and life.”

“Marshall and I were colleagues together at De Anza college. His office was right down the hallway from me. He made an impact on my teaching, and I remember his lessons today about the need for Asian American representation in the American film industry and about gender stereotypes. Thank you Marshall for your teaching and contributions to others. I'm so sorry to your loved ones.”

Karen H Chow wrote a sympathy message

“I am a former colleague of Kozo's at De Anza College, where he was an English and Asian American Studies professor. I taught with him in a program which served underrepresented Asian American students. I am shocked and saddened to hear of his passing, and I especially grieve for his two young sons. Along with them, Kozo's writings about his spiritual journey through cancer and trauma healing and his filmmaking and teaching will be his great legacy to the world.”
