John L. Duve Obituary

John L Duve, 74, passed peacefully into the arms of his Lord and Savior on December 20, 2023.
John was born on September 14, 1949, to John and Ada Duve in Pullman, Washington. He spent most of his youth in Nebraska when he excelled in sports, enjoyed camping and fishing, and the Boy Scouts. He graduated from Scottsbluff (Nebraska) High School in 1967. He went on to earn a Bachelors of Science degree in 1972 from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.

He moved to California in 1980, and from 1980-1987 he worked for the University of California at Irvine as Director of Parking and Transportation Systems. He was a member of the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on the status of handicapped persons and disabled veterans as well as the Executive Director on Parking and Transportation Advisory Committee. In 1983 he began working for the Los Angeles 1984 Summer Olympics Organizing Committee where he became the Village/Venue Transportation Manager for the Summer Games. After the Olympic Summer Games he went on to work for SANDAG (San Diego Association of Governments) as Sr Transportation Director until his retirement in 2007.
John L Duve has been listed as a noteworthy transportation executive by Marquis Who’s Who.

In retirement, he and his brother Tom, started a vineyard in Columbia, MO. Together they enjoyed growing grapes, making wine, and sharing their experiences with family and friends. He had an insatiable curiosity and was always researching and asking questions.

In 2000 he met and married
Carol E Erstad. They both loved to travel and together they were able to share much of the world. They both loved to run and together they ran many marathons, half marathons, and 10K’s.

He was an active member of the Dan McKinney YMCA in LaJolla, which became a very important part of his daily life. Friendships formed there would last his lifetime and beyond. He also was very active in his church at Torrey Pines in La Jolla, CA, as well as the men’s Bible Study at Horizon Church in Rancho Santa Fe, CA.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Paulette Duve (1996);
