He was predeceased by: his parents, Edmund Y. Bechtel and Arline Bechtel (Reppert). He is survived by: his wife JoAnn L. Bechtel (Muzalski); his children, Robert J. Bechtel, Jr. of St. Lawrence, Kristina L. Kujat of St. Lawrence and Kelly S. Romig (Jason Romig) of Beavertown, PA; his grandson Andrew Jason Romig; and his siblings, Larry Bechtel (Elsie Bechtel) of Boyertown, Betty Kulp (Ed Kulp) of Pike Township, Gloria Rader of Earl Township and Doris Wentzel of Earl Township.
