He was loved and cherished by many people including: his friend Mel; his parents, Grace Lauretta Smith and Milburn Henry Blevens; his wife Barbara Drake Johnson; his sister Elayne Zalky; his children, Kathryn Freer (Jonathon) and Alexander Blevens (Marcia); his grandchildren, Hannah Slamen (Alexander), Heather Wartanyan (Win), Abigail Brown (Erick), Carly Rasmussen (Dane), Meghan Moore (Zachary), Christopher Blevens (Melissa) and Andrew Blevens; and his friend Ramona Smith. He was also cherished by twelve great-grandchildren.

Mel served on the Robinson Jeffers Tor House Foundation and the Salvation Army board.
