He was predeceased by: his father Dole Pineapple; and his son Christopher C. Matthiessen. He is survived by: his spouses, Ann K. Matthiessen and Monica Moe Bustamante; his children, Robert M. Matthiessen Jr. (Mammoth Lakes, California) and Carrie M. O'Neal (Crested Butte, Colorado); his children-in-law, Yvette Matthiessen and John O'Neal; his grandchildren, Eddie, Annie Matthiessen, Taylor, John, Maria and Ellie O'Neal; his siblings, Ann Scarborough and John C. Matthiessen; his sons, Henry and Peter (Dorothy); and his niece Dodie Dye.
