He was predeceased by: his parents, Shirley Newman and Raymond Coates; and his siblings, Reggie and Brenda. He is survived by: his children, Joel Hornbeck and Rachel Stowell (Greg); his brother Karl; his nephews, Brian Christian and Jeron Newman; and his close friends, Anne Meissner and Shelly Klipp. He is also survived by numerous cousins relatives and friends.

The family is asking for donations to First Baptist Church of Canoga Park in his memory.
