Jeffrey Lasher wrote a sympathy message

“I was a graduate student, a Vietnam Veteran in 1973 at CSULB when I met Dr. Leonard Olguin. I completed four teaching credentials at CSULB,, my MS at CSUF Fullerton, and I completed a career with Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified/Rancho Santiago and Fullerton Community Colleges. I owe my full successful career as a teacher, a principal, and a community college instructor to my enduring friendship with my mentor, Leonard Olguin. God bless you. Tu amigo, Geofredo (Jeff Lasher)”

“Part 1. I was once a student of then "Mr." Olguin in Grammar/Middle School in Littlerock, CA in about 1958. He was and has always been my most impactful and favorite teacher. He was so different from every other teacher then and now! First of all he was an amazing story teller! He would start telling stories of his life and adventures and they usually had a point and purpose, or a moral to his stories. He was also a singer and guitar player. At that time I was a fledgling guitar player myself.”

“Part 2. So 7th grade. He wrote a song for Easter Sunrise Service and directed a choir from our school to sing it. He let me accompany on guitar. 1st gig for me! I have a photo! He could walk on his hands around the class even start on a table, and jump off onto his hands and continue walking on his hands!! Every student loved Mr Olguin. In 1994 I found out Dr Olguin to speak in Palmdale to a group of teachers. I found out at the last minute and missed him. So sad, now he is gone!”

Daphne Figueroa wrote a sympathy message

“I had the distinct pleasure to hear Dr. Olguin speak at a conference in the ‘90’s during graduate school. His keynote address, and even more so, his kindness, made a great impression on me. I thought of him often during my teaching career and just today, I wondered what thoughts he would have on education today. That search led me to find that he had passed away. I feel honored to have met him that one time. I can only imagine what a great loss this was to his family. Peace be with you.”

Mary Silva Holguin wrote a sympathy message

“As a young Bilingual Education teacher in the late 1970's I was very impressed with Mr. Olguin. I went to one of his sessions in a workshop, and viewed a video of his a few times. It always stayed with me, as an elementary bilingual teacher, as a middle school ESL teacher, and as a High School Spanish teacher. Looking for information on him I ran across this. My condolences to his family. He was a man/educator that had so much influence on education. May he rest in a special heavenly plac”

“My deepest sympathy to the Olguin Family. At this time, I am listening to a talk Mr. Olguin gave us as a Keynote Speaker at California Bilingual Education, CABE. I recorded his speech and now and then I listen to him. I am not s teacher, but as an immigrant and working in bilingual education I always felt he was talking to me. He made an enormous positive difference for bilingual education. I am so sorry to find out that he is not with us anymore. Mis oraciones para que la Familia Olguin.”
