She was loved and cherished by many people including: her parents, Vernon McWhirter and Hazel Marie McWhirter (Wagner); and her brother Don A. McWhirter.

She took training at the Benevolant Association for 3 years in Sunland Foundation, California and became a graduate nurse with the First Church of Christ, Scientist, Boston, Massachusetts.
