He was predeceased by: his wife Marlene Dedrick Smart; and his children, Paul Allen Smart and Debra Jean Smart. He is survived by: his children, Rhonda Ruiz (John) of Thatcher, Melvin Smart of Tucson and Michael Smart of Salem, Oregon; and his brother Oliver Gene "Pete" Smart of Carlsbad. He is also survived by ten grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.
