He is survived by: his former wife Lea; his daughters, Lea Desmarteau of Shreveport and Paetra Desmarteau Serra (Gino Serra) of Kansas City; his stepsons, Blaine Vanlandingham of Overland Park, Brent Vanlandingham (Susan) of Overland Park, Bart Fromme of Overland Park and Ben Fromme (Kym) of Overland Park; his brothers, Mike Desmarteau (Christine) of Surprise, Richard Desmarteau (Mary) of Peoria and Kelly Desmarteau (Vickie) of Stockton Kansas; his uncle Joseph Bellerive of Stockton; his grandchildren, Corbin Ramsey, Chloe Ramsey of Shreveport, Alessia Serra and Gioia Serra of Kansas City; and his stepgrandchildren, Braxton, Ben, Brock, Bryson Vanlandingham, Brenden, Baylor, Braiden, Brianna, Brooks, Addison and Fletcher Fromme. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Due to the pandemic, Merl's family will hold a memorial service to honor his life in the summer of 2021 in Stockton, Kansas, where we hope you will share your stories and raise a red beer in his honor.
