He was predeceased by: his wife Patricia Doty Nielsen; his parents, Knut Nielsen and Serena Nielsen; and his siblings, Fred Nielsen, Joseph Nielsen, Frances McIntire Kinard and Katherine Cart.

He is survived by: his nieces and nephews, Patrice McCoy, Yvette McIntire, Cyndi Nielsen, Yvette Foreman, Renee McCartney, Elizabeth Cart, Bessie Nielsen, Joe McIntire, Gregory Cart and Paul Dean Nielsen.
