He was predeceased by: his parents, Dillard Smith and Annie Mae Smith; his siblings, Sissy Smith and Ronnie Dale Smith; his brother-in-law Bruce Campbell; and his grandson Bryan Ortiz.
He is survived by: his child Leslie D. II; his wife Peggy; his children, Shawn Smith (Natalie) of Seattle, WA, Dillard Smith (Lisa) of Fountain Hills, AZ, Carrie Ortiz (Juan) of Morenci, AZ, Les Smith of Safford, AZ and Rebecca Smith of Clifton, AZ; his siblings, Jesse Smith (Jackie) of Somerset, KY, Butch Smith (Sherry) of Kerriville, TX and Linda Campbell of Leander, TX; and his grandchildren, John IV, Gabbi IV, Michelle IV, Chris IV, Elijah IV, Michael IV, Dillard IV, Bubba IV, Athena IV, Joshua IV, Reyna IV, Makayla IV, Tatum IV and Bitner IV. He is also survived by eleven great-grandchildren with two more on the way and numerous nieces and nephews.
