He was predeceased by: his parents, Frank Backhouse and Marie Backhouse (Adamson); his son David; and his siblings, Ted, Helen, Sonia and Charmian.
He is survived by: his wife Helen Boyce of Schumacher; his children, Fiona (Michel), Frances (Mark) and Gary (Lauren); his grandchildren, Marc, Daniel, Jeanne-Marie, Colette, Max and Jake; and his great grandchildren, Wren, Amelia, Claire and Cordelia. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
