He was predeceased by: his parents, Clarence Kersten and Juanita Kersten; and his siblings, Jack and Jane Butters. He is survived by: his children, Larry Kersten (Linda), Robert Kersten II, Ann Smiley (David), Laura Hahn (Stephen), Susan Symington-Kersten (Corey) and Sondra Johnson (Lee).
