He was predeceased by: his parents, James Dehart and Reba Dehart (Conley); his wife JoAnn Dehart; his son Joseph Schoening, Sr.; his grandson Joseph Schoening, Jr.; and his siblings, Anna Mae Lloyd, J. C. Dehart, Paul Dehart and Jack Dehart.

He is survived by: his children, Pam Vaughn of Van Buren, Sandra Murphy (Kenny) of Cedarville, Diana Kulak (Mark) of Cedarville and David Schoening of Van Buren; and his brother Bobby Dehart (Ann) of Oklahoma. He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren, and twenty-three great-grandchildren.
