He was predeceased by: his parents, Henry Ackerman and Pauline Ackerman (Kramer); his mother-in-law Anna Marie Heston; his daughter Mary Lisa Smith; and his siblings, Mary Tipton, Elaine Tillman, Rolla Ackerman, Irene Owens, Edward Ackerman, Wayne Ackerman and Buddy Ackerman.

He is survived by: his wife Tonia Ackerman; his children, Mandy Ackerman, John Ackerman (Rachel), Heather Edmondson (Roy) and Aaron Stewart (Ashley); and his sisters, Frances Milliken and Catherine Pettus (Glenn).
