He was predeceased by: his parents, Charlie Ray and Lucille Gates (Stoner); his former wife Norma Ellen Gates (Williams); his son Scotty Gates; and his sisters, Louise Emery and Kathryn Green.

He is survived by: his wife Judy Gates; his sons, Charles Albert Gates (Sally) of Charlotte and Larry Wayne Gates (Michelle) of Tuckerman; his daughter-in-law Teresa Kelly Gates of Flagstaff, Arizona; his siblings, J. C. Gates (Glenda) of Tuckerman, Jerry Gates (Velda) of Newport, Ronnie Gates of Tuckerman, Sue Huskey (Carroll) of Tuckerman and Carolyn Bailey of Tuckerman; his grandchildren, Tonya Holliway, Sammie Joe Gates Hogan (Brent), Hunter Gates (Emily), Chase Gates (Taylor) and Jeremiah Hisel (Becca); and his great grandchildren, Alto, Owen, Asher, Delilah, Caiden, Xander, Kloey, Sawyer and Haskin. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and a lifetime of friends.
