He was predeceased by: his parents, Alex Chmielewski and Martha Chmielewski (Guttman); his grandson Adam Busack; his brother Neil Chmielewski; and his sisters-in-law, Mary Chmielewski and Ginger Chmielewski.

He is survived by: his children, Richard Chmielewski (Sharon) and Ann Marie Busack (David); his former wife Elaine Beck (Diderich); his grandchildren, Kristin Marie Busack, Kaylin Chmielewski and Eric Chmielewski (Sarah); his great grandchildren, Josephine and June Chmielewski; and his siblings, Jerry Chmielewski and Mary Dodge.
