He is survived by: his wife Flavia Gates (Isom); his children, James Gates III, Harvey Knuckles, Kevin Knuckles, Ben Knuckles, Joseph Chambers, Amy Gates, Iris Greenway and Christy Adams; and his brother Dan Gates (Bonnie).
