He was predeceased by: his parents, Henry E. Bates and Susan Wallis Bates; and his former wife Patsy McGinnis Bates. He is survived by: his wife Donna Dudney Bates; his children, Patricia Abraham (Jim), Susan Brantley (Barry), Joseph Henry Bates III (Barbara) and Elisabeth Schach (Chris); his grandchildren, Will McNair (Marisol) and Hight McNair; and his great grandchildren, Katy Brantley, Kyle Brantley, Joey Abraham, Nathan Abraham, Ben Abraham, Elisabeth Bates, Jessie Bates, Sam Schach, Quinn Schach, Charles Schach, Ellie Schach, Hayes McNair, Emilie McNair and Bayley McNair.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial tributes in Dr. Bates' honor may be made to the Joseph H Bates Endowed Chair in Public Health Practice, UAMS College of Public Health Slot #820, 4301 W. Markham, Little Rock Arkansas 72205.

“Dear Donna and Family, I am deeply saddened to hear about Joe’s passing. He was a great friend and mentor not only to me but also to my daughter, Sarah who became an epidemiologist largely because of him. We were soulmates on environmental issues and all thing’s related to Hendrix College. The state of AR owes him so much for his contributions to public health and the advancement of the school. My heart is heavy with his passing and I will greatly miss him and his wisdom. Martha Jane Murray”
