He was predeceased by: his parents, Claud Duvall Smead and Jetta Vivian Brown Smead; his daughter Judy Suzanne Smead; and his siblings, Dale Smead, Hazel Smead, Mildred Hardesty, Mary Settlemoir and Carmen Baker.
He is survived by: his wife Sandra Smead of Kingsland; his children, Donis Smead (Missy) of Leola, Captain Smead (Jenny) of Fordyce, Deann Smith (Dewayne) of Newport and Renee McKelvin (Mike) of Camden; his sisters, Dean Hardesty of Kokomo, IN, Frances Doss of Clinton and Janell Johnston of Spring, TX; and his grandchildren, Cathrine Phillips (Cathy Sue), Kreg Smead (Zach), Katelyn Smead (Toodlums), Curt Smead (Turkey), Dayla Curry (Sock), Denver Smith (Kool-Aid), Dawsyn Smith, Mitchell McKelvin (Catfish), Clayton McKelvin, Bradley McKelvin (Jughead), Ross Smead (Roscoe) and Case Smead (Rooster). He is also survived by five great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
