He was predeceased by: his wife Gloria; his son Leon; and his siblings, JB, Hosie, James, Dezell Sweet, Fannie Taylor and Mattie Franklin.
He is survived by: his children, Albert Gates and Diane. He is also survived by five grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
