He was predeceased by: his parents, Ernest Carey and Doris White Carey; and his sister Linda Jean McLaughlin. He is survived by: his wife Joan Thomas Carey; his son Brian Carey; his stepchildren, Missy Berry (David) and Chad Davidson (Nelia); his grandchildren, Bailee Syrus (Landon), Taylor Woodard (Matt), Garrett Berry and Ryleigh Davidson (Austin Sims); his great grandchildren, Luke Syrus, Slayter Woodard and Mason Syrus; his niece Melissa Lewis (Harvey); and his nephews, Michael McLaughlin and Richard McLaughlin.
