He was predeceased by: his parents, Vester Steele and Ruth Griggs Worthington; his stepfathers, Ed Griggs and Harold Worthington; and his stepsiblings, John Griggs, Sammy Griggs, Marvin Griggs and Margaret Ann LaPradd.

He is survived by: his wife Jackie; his children, Amy Dee Freeman (William), Joseph Steele, John Steele and Cody Steele (Felicia); his grandchildren, Wesley Steele, Caliana Freeman, Tyler Smalling, Olivia Ellis, Logan Smalling (Savannah), Meredith Ellis, Landon Steele, Brody Steele and Emily Smalling; his great grandchild Freya Rae Smalling; and his siblings, Gary Steele, Deborah Feltman (David) and Diana Allison (Bobby). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
