He was predeceased by: his parents, Herbert Hess and Mildred Moore Hess; his wife Stella Hess; his daughter Nancy Jean Snyder; and his siblings, Rolland Hess, Nelson Hess and Betty Grove.
He is survived by: his children, Herbert Lee Hess (Natasha) of Victorville, Ross Hess (Brenda) of Horseshoe Bend, Arkansas and Alma Mitchell (John) of Elwell, Michigan; his brother William "Bill" Hess (Jannelle) of Michigan; and his grandchildren, Herbert Lee Hess, Jr. (Ina), Jessica Lynn Hess, Krystsina Shabanava, Tabitha Holt (Chris), John Mitchell (Heather), Violet Bauer and Michael Parish (Anna). He is also survived by eight great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
