He was predeceased by: his parents, George Ayres and Lily Wilmoth Ayres; his wife Bonnie Ayres; his stepfather Joe Scannell; his children, Johnny Ayres and Tammy Darlene of Little Rock; his brother Mike Scannell; and his grandson Cody McGowen.

He is survived by: his children, Steve Gilster of Baudette, Mike (Lisa Borgmeier) of Bentonville, Scott (Helen Gilster) of Argyle, Curt (Sherry Ayres) of Hindsville, Joshua (Elisha Ayres) of Washburn, Cathy (Max Wall) of Pineville, Sherry (John Hernandez) of Rogers, Linda (Randy Southwood) of Springdale and Donita Jascar of Mountainburg; and his sisters, Cathy Pain and Mary Scannell. He is also survived by twenty-two grandchildren, twenty-three great grandchildren, six great-great grandchildren, and numerous nephews and nieces.
