He was predeceased by: his parents, Juanita "Skip" Frances Abernathy (Angher) and Ray Abernathy; and his daughter Blythe Abernathy. He is survived by: his wife Jonna Abernathy; his children, Justin Abernathy, Jason Abernathy, Faith Freeman, Hope Abernathy, Charity Tackett and Rocket Abernathy; his stepdaughter April Miller; and his siblings, William Abernathy and Anne Abernathy. He is also survived by eight grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family askes donations to be made to the Fort Smith Chorale.
