He was predeceased by: his parents, Samuel Sonstegaard and Ida Sonstegaard (Baker); and his siblings, Mabel Sonstegaard and Ivan Sonstegaard. He is survived by: his wife Loretta Sonstegaard (Seller) of Fayetteville; his children, Barbara Hendrix (Sam) of Vancouver, Judi Taylor (Phillip) of Springfield, Paul Sonstegaard of Champaign and Richard Sonstegaard (Linda) of St. Augustine; and his grandchildren, Robert Hendrix (Mechelle), Leah Taylor, Elizabeth Sonstegaard, Rachel Sonstegaard, Zach Sonstegaard, Scott Cuyler Sonstegaard, Joshua Hemingway (Coleson Hemingway), Jordan Morin (Kurt) and Grant Johnson. He is also survived by four great-grandchildren.

“Miles worked in the field of transportation. I came across the following article from january 16, 2003, called getting the goods (https://news.uark.edu/articles/9996/getting-the-goods). Miles conducted research about methods for cargo transfer from one type of carrier to another. He showed that a method called horizontal transfer could be more efficient than the more common method of "lift and load" by giant cranes. It was a singular blessing to have known miles, a gentleman, a dear friend.”
