He was predeceased by: his parents, Marvin Thomas, Sr. and Marie Harrell. He is survived by: his wife Jacqueline Thomas; his sons, Melvin Thomas, James Thomas, Jr. and Courtney Mitchell; and his siblings, Darrell Thomas, Reginia Kimbrough, Melonie Thomas-Polk and Larry Bailey. He is also survived by four siblings.
