He was predeceased by: his parents, Gus Allen Smith and Effie Mann Smith; his wife Elizabeth Ann Venable Smith; his son Douglas Redman Smith; and his brothers, Charles Smith and Edmund Smith.
He is survived by: his daughter Regina Ann Flannigan; his grandchildren, Ryan Reginald Gossett, Douglas Redman Smith Jr. and Kacy Ann Palmer; and his sister Carolyn Smith Counts. He is also survived by seven great grandchildren.
