He was predeceased by: his parents, Lewis A Mattingly and Treva Mattingly (McFadden); his son Jason Sapp; and his sisters, Melba Jones and Patsy Carter.

He is survived by: his children, Desiree Sapp of Farmington, James L. Mattingly, Jr. of Mulberry and Michael A. Mattingly of Fort Smith; and his brother Darrel Mattingly of Alma. He is also survived by eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
