He was predeceased by: his parents, Dennie DeShields and Ruby Lee DeShields (Austin); his wife Helen Raye DeShields (Clarkson); and his siblings, Homer DeShields, D. W. DeShields, Virgil DeShields, Paul DeShields, Cuma Wilkerson, Opal Gann and Lucene Wilkinson.

He is survived by: his children, Gary DeShields (Joyce) of Bentonville and Lori DeShields Hale (Tim) of Bentonville; his grandchildren, Josh DeShields (Sarah) of Bella Vista, Jenny DeShields of Bella Vista and Erin Hale Holder (Josh) of Bentonville, Ark.; and his great grandchildren, Jordan DeShields of Springdale, John DeShields of Fayetteville, Destinee DeShields of Bella Vista, Emilia and Olivia Holder of Bentonville. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
