He was predeceased by: his parents, Harry James and Grace Savada Van Houten (Lee); his wife Margaret Harden; and his son David Van Houten. He is survived by: his children, Patti Van Houten of Bella Vista, Arkansas and Alan Van Houten of Washington, Iowa. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.
