He was predeceased by: his parents, John Douglas Bates and Rachel Chambers Bates; and his siblings, Frances Bates Johnson, Junior Chambers, Bill Chambers, Frank Chambers, Fernie Bates and John Douglas Bates, Jr..
He is survived by: his significant other Catherine M. Fletcher; his children, Freddie Bates, Jr., John Douglas "J. D." and Phyllis Thystrup; and his sister Barbara Goss.
