He was predeceased by: his parents, Tommie Anita Hodges (Jimmy) and Claudie "Hoot" Gibson; his siblings, Claudia McWilliams, Thomas "Buster" Gibson, Dorothy Hodges and Joyce Bascus; and his father-in-law Charles Thomas.

He is survived by: his wife Laurie Gibson; his children, Robert Gibson (Amy), Sara Whitehead (Chris), James Gibson Jr., Myra Gibson and Olivia Kreydatus (James Bennett); his stepdaughters, Jennifer Stevenson and Elizabeth Brewer (Jon); his grandchildren, Virginia "Ginna" Guice, Hannah Guice, Jacob "Jax" Whitehead, Kallie Guice, Abbey Gibson, Blake Gibson, Kamryn Peterson, Anthony Brand, Hannah Cronk, Gaea Stevenson, Eloise Stevenson, Jonathan Brewer and Layla Brewer; his great grandchildren, Elijah Carden and Grant Guice; his brother Leonard "Dooley" Gibson Sr.; and his mother-in-law Betty Thomas. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
