He is survived by: his wife Barbara Nix Coats; his children, Deborah Ellegood, Cheryl "Cheri" Grissom (Jerry) and Todd Coats (Denise); his brother Samuel Ward "Bud" Coats, Jr.; his grandchildren, Emily Grace Coats, Scott Rickard and Eric Rickard; and his pet Honey. He is also survived by 3 great grandchildren.
