He is survived by: his children, Donald Elwyn Nichols (Cindy) and Marcia Nichols White (John); his grandchildren, Whitney W. Williams (Todd) of Birmingham, Lauren W. Laird (Lee) of Birmingham, Haley W. Grayless (Ryan) of Birmingham, Kay N. Morton (Tre) of Birmingham and Brook B. Nichols (Katie) of Birmingham; his stepchildren, Judy J. Presley (Olin), John Jernigan, Susan J. Wessinger (John), Suzanne Pressley, Elizabeth Jernigan and Patrick Wessinger; and also Dede.
