He was predeceased by: his parents, Homer Johnson and Gena Wright Johnson; and his sister Peggy Zahlman. He is survived by: his children, Haley Pennington (Heath) of Vernon, AL and John Ross Johnson of Vernon, AL; his grandchildren, Brooklyn and Kye Pennington; his close friend Carolyn Eastman of Sulligent, AL; his niece Lisa Wood of Carpentersville, IL; and also, John, Suella Matthews, William and Kay Turner.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the LCHS Athletic Department, 8990 Highway 18, Vernon, AL 35592.
