He was predeceased by: his wife Doris Helms Carmichael; his former wife Betty Smith Carmichael; his sons, James Larry Carmichael and William Gary Carmichael; and his grandson James Henry Ricketts.

He is survived by: his daughters, Linda Carmichael Thomas (Bob) and Emma Suzanne Carmichael; his grandchildren, William Robert Thomas (Katherine), Kathryn Thomas Lucas (Trent), Lucy Ricketts Steffens (Brandon), John Carmichael Ricketts (Sarah) and Mary Pauline Ricketts of Virginia; his great grandchildren, Stella Elizabeth Thomas, Perry Elizabeth Lucas, Oliver Henry LeFevre-Ricketts and Theodore James LeFevre-Ricketts; and his daughters-in-law, Betsy Bethea Kopecky and Elaine Ashe Taylor.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the James P. and Doris H. Carmichael Family Endowed Scholarship (which will be given to DeKalb students who attend the University of Alabama).
