He was predeceased by: his wife Vera; his parents, John McLendon and Ruby McLendon; and his siblings, Joseph McLendon, John McLendon, Randolph McLendon and Idell Berry.
He is survived by: his children, James "Bodie" Edward McLendon, Jr. (Michelle), Kimberly Foster (Stan) and Sherry Johnson (Edward); his grandchildren, Jamie McLendon, Robin Ward (Wade), Nicholas McLendon (Ashley), James McLendon IV, Jennifer Chesser (Ben), Justin Jordan (Carmen), Matt Johnson (Brandi) and Megan Johnson; and his sister Virginia Stallings (Stanley). He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins.
