He was predeceased by: his parents, Aubia Ray Pennington and Nellie Faye Simmons Pennington; his stepmother Louise Pierce Pennington; and his brothers, Terry Pennington, Jerry Pennington and Ricky Pennington (Connie).

He is survived by: his wife Patricia "Patty" Pennington; his children, Jennifer Lucas (Stacy), Joseph Pennington and Ronnie Joe "R. J."; and his aunt Gracie Hamrick (Buddy).
