She was predeceased by: her father Henry Griggs; and her siblings, Howard Griggs and Nellie Dean Alexander. She is survived by: her husband Charles Messer; her daughters, Angela Caldwell (Lewis), Monica Messer and Sally Messer; her sister Virginia Dantro; her grandchildren, Andrew Caldwell (Molly) and Elizabeth Alldredge (Zac); her great grandchild Parker Alldredge; and her caregivers, Lois Mallard, Katrina Ross, Staci Kendrick and Miriam Smith. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
