He was predeceased by: his wife Nannette Cobb Shell; and his parents, Edna Johnson Shell and Cary Ezekiel Shell. He is survived by: his children, Nancy Shell Fayard (Gary) of Atlanta, GA and James Burton Shell (Kim) of Pawleys Island, SC; and his siblings, Cary E. Shell Jr. (Frances) and Linda Shell Tolliver (Wilbur Gotham). He is also survived by five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
