He was predeceased by: his parents, John Walter Attaway, Sr. and Gladys Lindsey Attaway; his son Stephen W. Attaway; his siblings, Donald W. Attaway and Margie A. Knight; and his niece Janet K. Bailey.
He is survived by: his daughter Myrna Attaway; his former wife Betty Joyce Basden; and his daughter-in-law Nancy Attaway. He is also survived by 6 nieces and nephews, and numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews.
