She was predeceased by: her husband Joseph K. Gilbert, Sr; her parents, Charles Johnson and Annie Johnson; and her siblings, Mary Duncan, Vivian Porter, Maxine Leech, Floyd Johnson and Charles Johnson.

She is survived by: her children, Joe Gilbert (Gail) and Carolyn Abston (Steve). She is also survived by 4 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends.
