He was predeceased by: his parents, William Early Avant and Ola Mae Wise Avant; and his siblings, Fred, Loicy, Elmer, Lennie Avant, Lona Belle Wise, Connie Ruth Cosby, Faye Lewis and Annie King.
He is survived by: his son William Howard Harrell; his granddaughters, Rebecca Harris (Dave) and Rachel Paulichen (John); his great grandchildren, Madeleine, Olivia Harris and Emma Paulichen; and his brother Alvie Avant (Johnny Faye) of Kinston. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
