He was predeceased by: his parents, Clyde Jimmy Poppell and Alma Bishop Poppell. He is survived by: his wife Sheila Ellison Poppell of Rockford; his sons, Nicholas Poppell (Rachael) of Rockford and Micah Poppell of Rockford; his grandchildren, Jackson Poppell, Savannah Poppell and Isla Mae Poppell; his brothers, Michael Whealton, Dean Poppell (Theresa), Wayne Whealton and James Poppell; his brothers-in-law, Perry Wren Ellison and Donald Ray Ellison; and his nieces and nephews, Stephanie Ellison Lemke, Melissa Hatchett, Amanda Olive, Stephanie Kendall, Crystal Pitts, Melissa Hadden, Denise Saakowski, Patrick Ellison, Christopher Ellison and Zack Ellison.
